Waltham Abbey is an Essex town on the border with Hertfordshire. Close to London it is very much a country town with Epping Forest to the east and Lee Valley to the west.
Waltham Abbey and the surrounding area provides a unique blend of heritage and countryside attractions to entertain the whole family, many of which are free. There’s the Abbey Gardens and Church, Cornmill Meadows Dragonfly Sanctury and Tree Park to explore.
Known as 'King Harold's' town it also hosts the district museum, shops and has an excellent range of restaurants, cafes and pubs. Nearby there is the River Lee Country Park, farms and swimming pool, all you need for a great day out any time of the year. There is also an outdoor leisure park, Town Mead, with lake, adventure playground, shop, putting green, picnic and barbecue areas, as well as football pitches and tennis courts.
The town has a long history, originally based on the Abbey itself. It has had Royal visitors as early as the 11th century onwards. After becoming a market town the Gun Powder Mills were established in the 1500's. The gunpowder was once transported by barge along the Lee Canal. The industry stopped finally after the Second World War, the mills becoming an explosives research establishment which closed in the 1990's. The canal itself is now a pleasant place to walk and leads all the way to the heart of London.
The Royal Gunpowder Mills now hosts around 14 exhibitions and attractions. Set in 170 acres of natural parkland and boasting 21 buildings of major historic importance, the site mixes fascinating history, exciting science and beautiful surroundings to produce a magical day out for all. Established in the 17th century and acquired by the Crown in 1787, the Royal Gunpowder Mills has a very important place in both the history of Great Britain and its home town of Waltham Abbey. Today there is still a market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, continuing a 700 year old tradition. It is a 'Charter' Market which means you will not find another market close by on these days. The town has managed to keep many of its old buildings and refurbished buildings are kept in tone.
